Incus is a free and open-source hypervisor for managing system containers and virtual machines. It was forked from LXD in 2024 by the Linux Containers community to provide a more lightweight and community-driven alternative. Incus supports running full Linux distributions inside isolated environments, using either native containers or lightweight virtual machines via QEMU. It offers a REST API, command-line tool, and web-based UI for managing instances. Features include live migration, storage pools, network management, and clustering across multiple hosts. Incus uses an image-based deployment system with support for common distributions like Ubuntu, Debian, Fedora, and Alpine. It runs on Linux and integrates with Ceph, ZFS, and LVM for storage.
