Grafana

Grafana is the leading open-source platform for monitoring and observability, providing rich interactive dashboards that turn time-series data into actionable insights. In the hosting industry, Grafana is the visualization layer that brings server metrics, application performance data, and infrastructure health into a single unified view.

Grafana connects to dozens of data sources out of the box, including Prometheus, InfluxDB, Elasticsearch, MySQL, PostgreSQL, Zabbix, Graphite, Loki (for logs), and Tempo (for traces). This flexibility means hosting providers can plug Grafana into their existing monitoring stack regardless of what collection tools they use. A typical hosting setup might combine Prometheus for metrics collection with Grafana for visualization and alerting.

The dashboard system is Grafana's core strength. Dashboards are built from panels that display data as graphs, gauges, tables, heatmaps, histograms, and more. Templating variables allow a single dashboard to work across hundreds of servers by switching between hosts, clusters, or data centers from a dropdown. The community maintains thousands of pre-built dashboards for common use cases like Linux server monitoring, MySQL performance, Nginx traffic, and Docker container metrics.

Grafana's alerting engine evaluates rules against incoming data and sends notifications through email, Slack, PagerDuty, OpsGenie, webhooks, and many other channels. Alert rules can be defined visually or through code, and alert routing ensures the right team gets notified about the right issues.

For hosting providers running multi-tenant infrastructure, Grafana Organizations and Teams provide role-based access control so different staff members see only the dashboards relevant to their responsibilities. Grafana can also be embedded into customer portals to provide clients with real-time views of their own resource usage.

Grafana Cloud offers a hosted SaaS version with a generous free tier, but most hosting providers self-host Grafana on their own infrastructure for full control over data retention and access.
