About GoToSocial

GoToSocial is a social network server that lets you run your own piece of the Fediverse. It implements the ActivityPub protocol, so you can follow and interact with accounts on Mastodon, Pleroma, and other compatible platforms. The project focuses on being simple to deploy, easy to maintain, and efficient enough to run on a Raspberry Pi or a low-cost VPS.

The server is written in Go and uses SQLite as its default database, with optional PostgreSQL support. It includes OAuth2 authentication, media handling with configurable size limits, and granular visibility controls for posts. GoToSocial exposes a Mastodon-compatible client API, so you can use existing Fediverse apps like Tusky, Pinafore, or Mastodon's web front-end.

This tool is ideal for individuals or small communities who want a personal social media presence without the overhead of a full Mastodon stack. It is free software under the AGPLv3 license, developed by a community-led project with no corporate backing. As of 2025, the project is still in beta but sees regular releases with steady feature growth.
