About Ghost
Ghost started as a Kickstarter project in 2013, built to replace the bloated WordPress admin with a clean, focused editor. It uses Node.js on the backend and a Handlebars-based theme system, so it runs fast even on cheap VPS hardware. You get a Markdown-style editor, built-in SEO tools, and a member management system that supports recurring subscriptions and tiered access. Ghost does not do comments or complex page builders on purpose; it handles content delivery, email newsletters, and paid memberships out of the box. The platform integrates with Stripe for payments and supports any SMTP provider for mail. You can host it yourself (the open source version is free) or use Ghost Pro, their managed hosting. The self-hosted version requires a server with Node.js and either SQLite or MySQL. Ghost is actively maintained by the Ghost Foundation, a nonprofit. A lot of independent journalists and small publishers rely on it because the editing experience stays out of your way and the performance is predictable.
