About Fess
Fess is an enterprise search server built on Java and Apache Lucene. It crawls files, databases, and web pages, then indexes them for full-text search through a web interface or REST API. You can deploy it on your own infrastructure and tune the crawler to fit your data sources.
It supports crawling local file systems, web pages, and databases via JDBC. Fess indexes PDFs, Office documents, HTML, and many other formats. The admin UI lets you manage crawlers, dictionaries, and search results without touching config files. It runs on Linux, Windows, and macOS.
Fess is free and open source under the Apache License 2.0. It is maintained by CodeLibs, a Japanese company. The project has a strong community and is used in production environments for internal site search and document retrieval.
