eLabFTW

eLabFTW is an open source electronic lab notebook for research teams to track experiments and manage lab inventory.

About eLabFTW

eLabFTW gives research labs a secure, self-hosted platform for recording experiments, storing data, and organizing protocols. It replaces paper notebooks with a searchable database that timestamps every entry and supports attachments from images to raw instrument files. Teams can collaborate in real time by sharing experiments, writing comments, and controlling permissions per user or group.

Built on PHP with a MySQL or PostgreSQL backend, eLabFTW runs on any Linux server and integrates with tools like ORCID for author identity and LDAP for single sign-on. It includes a built-in scheduler for booking equipment, a chemical and consumables database, and a template system for standardizing protocols. The REST API lets you push data from scripts or lab instruments directly into the notebook.

The project is maintained by Nicolas Carpi and a community of contributors, with a strong user base in academic and biotech settings. It is free software under AGPLv3, with optional paid support subscriptions available from the developers for deployment help or custom features. The French government's CNRS helped fund early development.
