About Duplicity
Duplicity backs up directories by producing encrypted tar-format volumes that can be stored on a remote file server or locally. It uses librsync to generate incremental backups that are space efficient and only upload the parts of files that have changed. This makes it a good fit for large directory trees where full backups would be too slow or expensive. Duplicity supports GnuPG encryption for all backup data, so you can store archives on untrusted hosts without exposing your files. It works with a wide range of backends including local filesystems, SSH/SCP, rsync, FTP, WebDAV, Amazon S3, Google Cloud Storage, Dropbox, and many others. The tool is written in Python and has been around since 2002. It is maintained by a small group of volunteers and distributed under the GPL license. Duplicity is a command-line tool with no graphical interface, which makes it ideal for scripting and cron jobs. It does not do bare-metal recovery or system image backups; it is focused on file-level backup with strong encryption and efficient use of bandwidth.
