About Duplicati

Duplicati is a free, open-source backup client that stores encrypted, incremental, compressed backups on cloud storage services and remote file servers. It is designed for personal servers, small hosting operations, and anyone who needs a reliable, automated backup solution without the cost of commercial backup platforms.

The tool supports an impressive range of storage backends: Amazon S3, Google Cloud Storage, Google Drive, Backblaze B2, Microsoft Azure, OneDrive, Dropbox, SFTP/FTP, WebDAV, Rclone-compatible services, and many more. This flexibility means you can use whatever storage is cheapest or most convenient for your situation.

All backups are encrypted with AES-256 before leaving the machine, so data is secure even on third-party cloud storage. Incremental backups with block-level deduplication mean that after the initial full backup, only changed data blocks are uploaded, dramatically reducing bandwidth and storage usage.

Duplicati provides a web-based UI for configuring backup jobs, schedules, retention policies, and restore operations. Command-line operation is also supported for scripting and automation. The scheduler handles backup timing and the verification system regularly checks backup integrity.

For VPS hosting users and small hosting providers, Duplicati offers a zero-cost way to maintain offsite backups of server data. It is not a replacement for hosting-specific tools like JetBackup (which integrate with control panels and understand hosting account structures), but it excels at general-purpose server backup to cloud storage.
