Drupal started as a message board in 2000 and grew into one of the most powerful content management systems on the web. It is built on PHP and uses a modular architecture that lets you assemble sites from thousands of contributed modules. You can create anything from a simple blog to a complex multi-site platform with custom content types, user roles, and workflows. The system handles multilingual content out of the box and includes built-in support for accessibility standards. Drupal's taxonomy system is more flexible than most CMS tools, letting you tag and organize content however you want. The admin interface was overhauled in version 8 and continues to improve with each release. Views, the module for creating lists and grids of content, is one of its most powerful features. Drupal also integrates well with external services through its REST API and JSON:API support. The community is large and active, with regular security updates and a dedicated security team. Many government sites, universities, and large media companies run on Drupal because of its security track record and scalability. Acquia, founded by Drupal's creator Dries Buytaert, offers commercial hosting and support. The learning curve is steeper than WordPress, but the flexibility is unmatched for complex projects.
