Collabora Online

Collabora Online is a self-hosted online office suite based on LibreOffice technology. It provides web-based editing of documents, spreadsheets, and presentations directly in the browser, similar to Google Docs or Microsoft 365 but running on your own infrastructure.

For hosting providers, Collabora Online is primarily relevant as an integration component for Nextcloud and ownCloud deployments. When paired with Nextcloud, it enables collaborative document editing, real-time co-authoring, commenting, and version tracking for files stored on the hosting platform. This transforms a simple file sync service into a full productivity platform.

The suite supports all major document formats including DOCX, XLSX, PPTX, ODF, PDF, and many others. Format fidelity is strong since it uses the same rendering engine as LibreOffice. Documents created in Microsoft Office open and edit correctly, and vice versa.

Collabora Online runs as a Docker container that communicates with the hosting application (Nextcloud, ownCloud, or custom integrations) via the WOPI protocol. The container handles all document rendering and editing, while the hosting application manages file storage and user authentication.

Hosting providers can offer Collabora Online as a premium feature alongside Nextcloud hosting. It adds significant value for business customers who need collaborative document editing without relying on Google or Microsoft cloud services. GDPR compliance is straightforward since all data stays on the hosting provider's servers.

Licensing includes a free community edition (limited to a small number of connections) and commercial licenses for larger deployments. The CODE (Collabora Online Development Edition) Docker image is free for testing and small deployments.
