About Coder

Coder is an open-source platform that turns your infrastructure into a fleet of cloud development workspaces. You define each environment with Terraform or a Dockerfile, and Coder spins up a full IDE (VS Code, JetBrains, or a web terminal) on a remote server. It handles networking, authentication, and resource limits so developers just connect and code.

Workspaces are ephemeral by design, but you can persist home directories or mount volumes. Coder supports major cloud providers, Kubernetes, and bare metal. It integrates with Git providers, OIDC identity providers, and your existing CI pipeline. The underlying technology is a Go server that manages Terraform state for each workspace, with a wireguard tunnel for secure connections.

Originally developed by Coder Technologies, Inc., the project is fully open source under AGPL-3.0. It targets teams that want self-hosted or air-gapped development environments. Hundreds of companies use it, including startups and Fortune 500 firms, to standardize tooling without giving up local-first workflows.
