CockroachDB takes the relational database model you already know from PostgreSQL and spreads it across multiple nodes, data centers, or even cloud regions. It speaks PostgreSQL wire protocol, so you can use standard SQL and connect with most PostgreSQL client libraries without changing your code. The database automatically replicates your data, handles node failures, and rebalances load as you add or remove servers. It offers serializable isolation for transactions, which is the strongest consistency level available in distributed systems. You can run it as a self-hosted cluster on your own servers or use the CockroachDB Serverless and Dedicated offerings on Cockroach Labs cloud. The open source core is licensed under the Business Source License, which limits production use by competitors but is free for most applications. It integrates with Kubernetes via an operator, supports Geo-Partitioning for data residency requirements, and includes built-in backup and restore. CockroachDB was created by Cockroach Labs, founded by former Google engineers who worked on Bigtable and Spanner.
