About Cassandra
Cassandra is a distributed wide-column store originally built at Facebook to power their inbox search feature. It was open sourced in 2008 and became an Apache top-level project in 2010. It is built for horizontal scalability and high availability, trading consistency for partition tolerance under the CAP theorem. Data is automatically replicated across multiple nodes and even across data centers, so there is no single point of failure. It uses a Cassandra Query Language (CQL) that looks similar to SQL, which makes it more approachable for developers coming from relational databases. You can tune consistency per query, choosing between strong consistency or low latency. Cassandra runs on Linux (and other Unix-like systems) and works well with real-time analytics, time-series data, IoT, and applications that can't afford downtime. Its active community releases regular updates, and it integrates with Spark, Kafka, and Hadoop for large-scale data processing. It is maintained by the Apache Software Foundation under the Apache License 2.0. Notable users include Netflix, Apple, and Instagram, who run it at massive scale.
