Bitbucket, originally created by Jesper Noehr and acquired by Atlassian in 2010, is a web-based platform for hosting Git and Mercurial repositories. It goes beyond simple code storage by bundling Bitbucket Pipelines for continuous integration and deployment directly into each repository. You can automate builds, tests, and deployments without leaving the interface. The service also includes pull requests with inline code review, code owners, and required checks to enforce quality gates. Branch permissions allow you to restrict who can push to specific branches, which is useful for managing main and release branches. Its deep integration with Jira and Trello makes it a natural fit for teams already using Atlassian products. Bitbucket Cloud offers three tiers: a free plan limited to five users, a standard plan with unlimited users, and a premium plan with advanced deployment permissions. There is also Bitbucket Server for self-hosted environments. The platform supports hooks for extensibility and offers a REST API for custom automation. It is widely used by small startups and large enterprises alike for its combination of repository hosting and built-in DevOps tooling.
