The Time Zone Information Format
RFC 8536, “The Time Zone Information Format”, is a Proposed Standard document published in February 2019 by A. Olson, P. Eggert, K. Murchison. It has been obsoleted by RFC 9636 — refer to the newer document for the authoritative version. The canonical text is published by the RFC Editor.
Abstract
This document specifies the Time Zone Information Format (TZif) for representing and exchanging time zone information, independent of any particular service or protocol. Two media types for this format are also defined.
What “Proposed Standard” means
An entry-level standards-track specification: stable, peer-reviewed and a solid basis for implementation, though it may still evolve before becoming an Internet Standard.
