RFC 5738, “IMAP Support for UTF-8”, is an Experimental document published in March 2010 by P. Resnick, C. Newman. It updates RFC 3501. It has been obsoleted by RFC 6855 — refer to the newer document for the authoritative version. The canonical text is published by the RFC Editor.
Abstract
This specification extends the Internet Message Access Protocol version 4rev1 (IMAP4rev1) to support UTF-8 encoded international characters in user names, mail addresses, and message headers. This document defines an Experimental Protocol for the Internet community.
