RFC 4379, “Detecting Multi-Protocol Label Switched Data Plane Failures”, is a Proposed Standard document published in February 2006 by K. Kompella, G. Swallow. It updates RFC 1122. It has since been updated by RFC 5462, RFC 6424, RFC 6425, RFC 6426, RFC 6829, RFC 7506, RFC 7537, RFC 7743. It has been obsoleted by RFC 8029 — refer to the newer document for the authoritative version. The canonical text is published by the RFC Editor.
Abstract
This document describes a simple and efficient mechanism that can be used to detect data plane failures in Multi-Protocol Label Switching (MPLS) Label Switched Paths (LSPs). There are two parts to this document: information carried in an MPLS "echo request" and "echo reply" for the purposes of fault detection and isolation, and mechanisms for reliably sending the echo reply.
