Capabilities Advertisement with BGP-4
RFC 3392, “Capabilities Advertisement with BGP-4”, is a Draft Standard document published in November 2002 by R. Chandra, J. Scudder. It obsoletes RFC 2842. It has been obsoleted by RFC 5492 — refer to the newer document for the authoritative version. The canonical text is published by the RFC Editor.
Abstract
Currently BGP-4 requires that when a BGP speaker receives an OPEN message with one or more unrecognized Optional Parameters, the speaker must terminate BGP peering. This complicates introduction of new capabilities in BGP. This document defines new Optional Parameter, called Capabilities, that is expected to facilitate introduction of new capabilities in BGP by providing graceful capability advertisement without requiring that BGP peering be terminated. This document obsoletes RFC2842.

A historical maturity level (retired in 2011) that sat between Proposed Standard and Internet Standard and required multiple interoperable implementations.
