Signaling System 7 Message Transfer Part 2 - User Adaptation Layer

Overview

RFC 3331, “Signaling System 7 Message Transfer Part 2 - User Adaptation Layer”, is a Proposed Standard document published in September 2002 by K. Morneault, R. Dantu, G. Sidebottom, B. Bidulock, J. Heitz. The canonical text is published by the RFC Editor.

Abstract

This Internet Draft defines a protocol for backhauling of SS7 MTP2 User signaling messages over IP using the Stream Control Transmission Protocol (SCTP). This protocol would be used between a Signaling Gateway (SG) and Media Gateway Controller (MGC). It is assumed that the SG receives SS7 signaling over a standard SS7 interface using the SS7 Message Transfer Part (MTP) to provide transport. The Signaling Gateway would act as a Signaling Link Terminal.

What “Proposed Standard” means

An entry-level standards-track specification: stable, peer-reviewed and a solid basis for implementation, though it may still evolve before becoming an Internet Standard.
