RFC 2246, “The TLS Protocol Version 1.0”, is a Historic document published in January 1999 by T. Dierks, C. Allen. It has since been updated by RFC 3546, RFC 5746, RFC 6176, RFC 7465, RFC 7507, RFC 7919. It has been obsoleted by RFC 4346 — refer to the newer document for the authoritative version. Abstract
This document specifies Version 1.0 of the Transport Layer Security (TLS) protocol. The TLS protocol provides communications privacy over the Internet. The protocol allows client/server applications to communicate in a way that is designed to prevent eavesdropping, tampering, or message forgery.
What “Historic” means
A specification that has been superseded or is otherwise no longer recommended for use.
