RFC 1459, “Internet Relay Chat Protocol”, is an Experimental document published in May 1993 by J. Oikarinen, D. Reed. It has since been updated by RFC 2810, RFC 2811, RFC 2812, RFC 2813, RFC 7194. The canonical text is published by the RFC Editor.
Abstract
The IRC protocol is a text-based protocol, with the simplest client being any socket program capable of connecting to the server. This memo defines an Experimental Protocol for the Internet community.
