Egyptian Revolution internet blackout

On 27 January 2011, the Egyptian government instructed ISPs to withdraw the BGP route announcements for nearly all Egyptian IP space, taking the country offline almost in its entirety. The blackout lasted five days and is considered the first nation-scale internet shutdown explicitly used as a political tool. It triggered the international community's first sustained debate about the technical possibility and political legitimacy of disconnecting a country from the public internet.
