China Great Firewall

China operates the most extensive and sophisticated national internet filtering system in the world. Known as the Great Firewall, it blocks most major Western platforms (Google, Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, many news sites) and impedes circumvention attempts. The system has been in continuous evolution since the late 1990s. China is not a "shutdown" in the strict sense but maintains an alternative internet ecosystem severed from much of the global web.
