The registrant is distinct from the administrative contact, technical contact, and billing contact, though one person or entity may fill all roles.
When a domain is registered, the registrant enters into a contract with the registrar (the company that processes the registration). The registrant agrees to the registrar's terms of service and the registry's policies. The registrant has the authority to transfer the domain to another registrar, update contact information, and set nameservers.
