What is ITU-T?
ITU-T is the United Nations agency that sets global telecommunications standards, including X.509 certificates and G-series video codecs.
The ITU Telecommunication Standardization Sector (ITU-T) is one of the three sectors of the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), a specialized agency of the United Nations. It is the primary body responsible for coordinating and publishing global standards for telecommunications and information and communication technology (ICT) networks. Its standards, known as Recommendations, cover everything from network protocols and transmission systems to multimedia codecs and security architectures.
Recommendations are developed through a consensus-driven process involving member states, private sector companies, and academic institutions. They are grouped into series identified by letters, such as the X-series (data networks, open system communications, and security) and the G-series (transmission systems and media, digital systems, and networks). Two of its most widely used standards are X.509, which defines the format of public key certificates for authentication and encryption, and H.264 (MPEG-4 AVC), a video compression standard co-developed with ISO/IEC that enables efficient video streaming.
ITU-T operates alongside other standards bodies such as the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF) and the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE). Its purview overlaps with but is distinct from the IETF: ITU-T traditionally covers telecom network infrastructure and public switched telephone networks, while the IETF focuses on internet protocols. However, modern work, such as on 5G, cloud computing, and the Internet of Things, increasingly bridges both domains.
