About .rmit
.rmit was a generic top-level domain intended for Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology. IANA records show the domain was delegated in late 2016 to RMIT. It never made it into the root zone, however. In September 2021, the delegation was revoked. The domain was effectively dead on arrival. No registry operator was ever assigned. This was not a sponsored TLD. It existed on paper only as a failed application.
History
The .rmit TLD was requested by RMIT through ICANN's new gTLD program. IANA approved the delegation on November 23, 2016. For reasons not detailed in the public record, the domain never appeared in the root zone. The revocation notice came less than five years later, on September 27, 2021. The original registration date was December 23, 2015. The whole endeavor stands as a cautionary tale about the gap between application and operational reality.
Eligibility & restrictions
Not assigned. No eligibility rules were ever published because the TLD never became operational.
