It is operated by the Museum Domain Management Association, an affiliate of the International Council of Museums, based in Paris. Registration is restricted to verified museums, museum professionals, and related institutions. The domain was introduced in 2001, one of the earliest sponsored TLDs created to protect the cultural heritage sector's online identity. The technical backend is managed by AFNIC, the French registry, providing DNS and WHOIS services through ICANN accredited registrars.
