The domain is a closed, brand TLD, meaning only IBM and its authorized affiliates can register names in it. It is not open to public registration. IBM applied for .ibm under ICANN's New gTLD program. The registry is managed internally, with technical and administrative contacts hosted through CSC. The domain supports DNSSEC and has a WHOIS server at whois.nic.ibm. The delegation of .ibm was approved by IANA in September 2014. The TLD gives IBM a dedicated namespace for its digital identity and services, increasing control and brand security online.
