About .cat

The .cat domain is a sponsored TLD for the Catalan linguistic and cultural community. It is operated by Fundacio puntCAT, a non profit foundation based in Barcelona. The domain is open to anyone who publishes content in Catalan or promotes Catalan culture online. Registrations are managed through ICANN accredited registrars, and there are no strict geographic restrictions. You do not need to live in a Catalan speaking area, but your site should relate to Catalan language or culture. The domain launched in 2005 and was one of the first TLDs for a language community rather than a country or industry. It has since grown into a widely used namespace for Catalan related projects, businesses, and personal sites.

History

The .cat domain was delegated in December 2005 after a long campaign by the Catalan community. The IANA report from 2005 details the delegation process. It was one of the earliest sponsored TLDs under ICANN's new generic TLD program, designed specifically for a cultural and linguistic group.
