About .amazon
.amazon is a generic top-level domain (gTLD) operated by Amazon Registry Services, Inc., a subsidiary of Amazon.com, Inc. It was delegated in 2020 after a long and contentious process involving the governments of Brazil and Peru, who argued that the name should be reserved for the Amazon rainforest region. The domain is open for registration by anyone, but Amazon Registry controls the namespace and sets policies. It is primarily used by Amazon and its affiliates for brand-related purposes, though third parties can register domains subject to the registry's rules. The TLD's delegation followed a 2019 ICANN decision that allowed Amazon to proceed, with certain protections for public interest uses related to the Amazon region.
History
The .amazon domain was first applied for in 2012 as part of ICANN's new gTLD program. Brazil and Peru objected, citing the name's geographic significance. After years of negotiations and a Governmental Advisory Committee (GAC) advice, ICANN's board approved the delegation in 2019. Amazon agreed to a set of commitments, including not using the domain for certain geographic or environmental terms. The domain was officially delegated on May 28, 2020.
Eligibility & restrictions
No general eligibility restrictions for registrants, but the registry may impose policies. Amazon has committed to not register certain geographic or environmental terms related to the Amazon region.
